17 Things That Happen When You’ve Been Friends With Someone For, Literally, Ever

Thought Catalog

1. Inevitably, you move to different states, go to different schools, and sometimes lose touch. But when you return, you’re still as weird and dysfunctional as ever before.

2. You don’t even need to get to the punchline anymore, they’re already laughing.

3. You become friends with their parents too, seeing as they’ve all but adopted you at this point. It’s not uncommon to receive texts from them on the reg.

4. You really do start acting like an old married couple. You’re not afraid to bicker, and honestly, you’re probably too attached to each other to stay mad for long.

5. Personal space has no bearing on you. Boundaries have completely dissolved into the “it’s 2 a.m. I’m miserable and getting into bed with you deal with it” abyss.

6. You get comfortable with silence, arguably the most awesome aspect of any relationship. You can go on trips together or…

Technologically Challeneged

As I sit here writing this blog, I want to scream and throw my computer against the wall! sometimes it is difficult to get things done because technology can be so temperamental. Everyone uses technology for a reason and has things that they need to get done. They have a plan of attack and get ready to get work done and BAM! technology has a mind of its own.

We were supposed to be able to sit and fill out course evaluations and then work on our portfolios and then my computer said hey that is not going to happen. My mouse isn’t working and I have to click on things about 1,000 times for it to even open. Even though this is really annoying and aggravating, I feel like times like these make you stay on your toes and makes you roll with the punches.

I had to be on my toes for the story book because I was working with windows movie player and then all of a sudden it stopped working. I ended up having to teach myself how to use imovie and it ended up working out very well!! Guess maybe I should thank technology then? haha

Today, many people rely heavily on technology; sometimes a little too much. I know my parents often are saying “get off your phone”, “why do you text so much”, but I feel dependency on technology is being seen more and more with the newer generations. I feel like the older people and older generations do not understand the appeal as much because they did not have it when they were our age. So for them, they feel that it isn’t a necessity because they have already lived without it for so long.

I agree to a point that we are dependent on technology but sometimes I feel that we think too much about the negatives and not so much on the positive. Iphones for example, are very popular; a lot of people have Iphones. I find that they are very very useful in finding things out or getting stuff done. When my friend came up to Buffalo to visit me, I wanted to go out to dinner but I didn’t know where we could go. I talked to the siri feature and asked about the restaurants around me. My phone then was able to give me a whole bunch of options that I didn’t know were around.

Even tough we rely on technology a lot, people need to remember that it does help too! It is not all negative

Task Stream

As an Education Major, you have to make an account on a website called Task Stream. This is a sight that holds a digital portfolio of all the work that you submit. There are classes that we have to take here at Canisius College that you have a common assignment for. This means that no matter what section you are in, you have to do the same assignment. These assignments for education majors go on task stream.

Before, I thought that task stream was the stupidest thing ever. I thought it was very complicated and that it was a waste of time. But with one of my classes this semester I have learned that it is actually a really helpful tool. In my literacy block class, I have to teach two lessons this semester. One on reading and one on writing. With the help of Task Stream, I was able to create a lesson plan really easily. There are a whole bunch of drop boxes and such that make life a lot easier.

Yay technology 🙂

There is this cool program that we learned in class that is called Jing. You can download it on your computer and use it to either take a screen shot or a video of what is on your screen. I had never heard it before this class but I am glad that I learned about it.

I think that this can be a very useful tool to use in the classroom because you could use it to help teach a lesson. For example, if you were doing stations for a unit on the history of New York State, you could make a Jing on how to find a credible source or you can make a Jing on how to get to the correct website. This would be good because you wouldn’t have to waste time in the beginning of the activity to explain it to everyone and then have kids forget how to do it because they went to a different activity first.

I am really happy that I am learning all of these different tools that I will be able to bring into my classroom when I become a teacher!!! 🙂

Computers in the Classroom

I have expressed quite a few times how torn I am when it comes to having technology in the classroom. I think that it is important to have alternative ways to learn but I also think that it is important to have children learn the basics/ fundamentals like learning how to read out of a text book and also how to look words up in an actual dictionary and not look it up on dictionary.com.

For one of my classes this semester I have to work in a classroom at Windemere Boulevard Elementary school. In my placement, I am in a kindergarten classroom that has 4 computers. I would think that kindergartners’ would not be able to navigate on the computer but I was wrong.

In this classroom, the children use the computers to use a website called Star fall. This site is to practice phonics, reading, math, and other academics but in the form of games so that it is appealing to the kids. I think that this is actually a really creative thing to do because when the kids go on the computer it is during stations so the teachers are either testing or working on a different skill. Sometimes when the teacher isn’t paying attention, students fool around and aren’t productive. This is a way for students to have fun and learn and work on skills all at the same time.

Power Point Presentations

This day in age, it is very common to use power point to create presentations. I have been using power point since elementary school. Throughout the years, the more experience I get with it and the more I learn about the program, the more I see how many features there are to use and how they could help in the classroom.

A couple weeks ago in class, we learned how to narrate power points. It is possible to set them up where you don’t even have to click the button to continue. You can set it on a timer where the slides just transition along with the narration.

I think that this can be a very useful tool in the classroom because you can have children do stations individually and still have the feeling that they are being taught by the teacher. I also think that this program is just good all together because it provides students with a visual while they are learning. It is important to keep UDL in mind for all of your lessons and this is a good way to do it.
